Multiplex report outlines its sustainability efforts

Multiplex Construction Canada recently released its third annual sustainability report, outlining the specific actions it’s taken to further its environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda within the industry.

Among the highlights of the 2020 Positive Impact Report are:

• Multiplex was the first construction company in Canada – and just the 10th in any sector – to have an approved science based target under the respected Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi);
• The company boosted its landfill diversion rate to 79 per cent, including over 95 per cent of demolition and construction waste from the Bay Adelaide Centre – North Tower project (which recently held a virtual tour); and
• It held over 50 environmental training sessions for over 500 attendees.

“We cannot talk of resilience in construction without sustainability. It is essential that we maintain focus on decarbonizing the built environment as one of the greatest challenges continuing to face our industry,” said Terry Olynyk, President and Managing Director for Multiplex Canada.

“As contractors, we have a unique opportunity to influence decisions throughout the construction process and champion solutions that will create positive impacts for people and the environment, far beyond the completion of our projects,” he added

On the social impact side of things, Multiplex provided over 450 hours of health, safety and wellbeing training internally, and 650 hours of external training. It also maintained its governance and business ethics standards, which includes accurate financial and operational reporting and compliance with laws and regulations.
